DAY 13: Favourite Book
This is hard. I read a lot Or listen to audiobooks while I work. But I I don’t think I have a favourite book, or even a single favourite genre. True stories, novels, informational books, autobiographies, fun or funny or educational kids books, memoirs.. I’m not that fussy about what I read: It needs to be interesting, and it can’t be too gruesome.
I like stories about other counties. A favourite story (Vashti and the Strange God) I read as a kid was about a girl growing up in the slums of Kolkata (then Calcutta). This book inspired me to spend a lot of time researching India and Hinduism and write a story of my own.
I once read a story to my students about some Children who moved from England to the Amazon. I can’t remember the name of the book, but it fascinated all of us, and made me interested in the Amazon Rainforest.
Mara of the Nile is a book I read more times than I can count. The plot is mesmerizing, and it’s based in Egypt, a country I love.
The Scarlet Pimprenelle is another book I’ve read more than once. Every couple years I like to find a copy and refresh my memory.
A book about a family who takes care of dying children through the foster care system, a story about one of the first white missionary families in Africa, a book about people who explore the ocean, a book about FBI in Russia during the Cold War, A true story about someone wrongly accused of a crime, books about what life was and, in some cases, is still like for black people in North America post-slavery, Residential School stories, books about teachers, about schools...
I don’t remember names and authors. I remember stories.
